A train around a volcano
The FCE Ferrovia Circum Etnea, Railway Built between 1895 and 1898, for many years it was one of the fastest means of communication for the Etna towns up to the sea.
On one side of the line Giarre, a charming town overlooking the sea, with a fantastic tourist port, on the other side the baroque city devoted to Sant'Agata, Catania. The whole line is almost a ring that goes all around Etna otherwise known as Mongibello from Mons Gibel, mountain in Greek and Arabic. The route started from the historic center of Catania and exactly from the port, now the city part has been transformed into an underground system little known to the people of Catania. The old narrow-gauge diesel train begins its journey from Catania towards Randazzo, a changeover point for trains heading to Giarre. There are frequent stops outside the station to allow farm laborers to get on, just to underline the usefulness of this connection for the famous Bronte pistachio. The panorama offered is truly varied, passing from the expanses of pistachio groves to the landscape of lava rock up to returning to the sea when approaching Giarre. From 2 June 2016, an on-board bike service was definitively introduced which can make it even more interesting to visit the various towns touched by the FCE stations and also to reach the various cycling routes of Etna more comfortably

FCE Ferrovia Circum Etnea Costruita tra il 1895 e il 1898, per tanti anni è stato uno dei mezzi di comunicazione più veloci per i paesi Etnei fino al mare.
Da un lato della linea Giarre, ridente cittadina che si affaccia sul mare, con un fantastico porto turistico, dall'altro lato la città barocca e devota a Sant'Agata, Catania. Tutta la linea è quasi un anello che gira tutt'intorno all'Etna altrimenti nota come Mongibello da Mons Gibel, monte in greco e arabo. Il percorso partiva dal centro storico catanese ed esattamente dal porto, adesso la parte cittadina è stata trasformata in metropolitana poco nota ai catanesi. Il vecchio treno diesel a scartamento ridotto incomincia il suo viaggio da Catania verso Randazzo punto di cambio per i treni diretti a Giarre. Non sono rare le fermate fuori stazione per permettere la salita dei braccianti agricoli, giusto per sottolineare l'utilità di questo collegamento per il famoso pistacchio di Bronte. Il panorama offerto è veramente variegato si passa dalle distese di pistacchieti al paesaggio di sola roccia lavica fino a ritornare al mare quando ci si avvicina a Giarre. Dal 2 giugno del 2016 è stata introdotto in via definitiva un servizio di bici a bordo che può rendere ancora più interessante visitare i vari paesi toccati dalle stazioni della FCE e anche raggiungere più comodamente i vari percorsi ciclistici dell'Etna.
